Ocean County’s Most Dangerous Roads
Ocean County’s road network funnels heavy local and seasonal traffic onto a handful of corridors, and that’s where most serious crashes happen:
- The Garden State Parkway — the spine of the county (Exits 63–91), with high-speed merging crashes and summer-weekend congestion.
- Route 37 — Toms River’s main artery and the bridge to Seaside; one of the busiest and most crash-prone roads in the county.
- Route 9 — the older north-south route through Lakewood, Toms River, Barnegat, and Stafford.
- Route 70 and Route 88 — the main east-west connectors into Brick and Point Pleasant.
- Route 72 — the gateway to Long Beach Island, jammed every summer weekend.
- Route 35 — the barrier-island road through Seaside and the beach towns.
Summer shore traffic multiplies the crash risk on every one of these roads from May through September.
Rear-End Crashes: the Most Common Ocean County Accident
Rear-end collisions are the single most common type of car accident in Ocean County — stop-and-go Parkway traffic, summer backups on Route 37 and Route 72, and distracted driving all drive the numbers up. The good news for victims: liability in a rear-end crash is usually clear, because the driver behind is almost always responsible for stopping in time. If you were rear-ended, see our Ocean County rear-end accident page — and don’t let the insurer dismiss your whiplash or soft-tissue injury as “minor.”
Common Car Accident Injuries We Handle
- Whiplash and soft-tissue neck and back injuries
- Herniated and bulging discs
- Concussions and traumatic brain injury
- Broken bones and fractures
- Shoulder, knee, and spinal injuries
Ocean County crash victims are often treated at Community Medical Center in Toms River, Ocean University Medical Center in Brick, or Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin. We build your case around your medical record so the insurance company can’t minimize what you’ve been through.
How New Jersey No-Fault Works
New Jersey is a no-fault state. After a crash, your own PIP (Personal Injury Protection) coverage pays your medical bills first, regardless of who caused it. To sue the at-fault driver for pain and suffering, your policy’s lawsuit option matters — see our guide to the verbal threshold. We also handle comparative-negligence disputes and uninsured/underinsured motorist claims when the other driver has no coverage.
What to Do After a Car Accident in Ocean County
Document the scene, get medical attention even if you feel “okay,” don’t give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer, and call a lawyer before you accept any offer. Our full checklist is here: what to do after a car accident in NJ.

The Clock Starts the Day of Your Ocean County Crash
N.J.S.A. 2A:14-2 sets the general limit: an action for injury to the person must be “commenced within two years next after the cause of any such action shall have accrued.” N.J.S.A. 59:8-8, part of the Tort Claims Act, sets a much shorter one when a public entity is on the other side: the claim must be presented “not later than the 90th day after accrual,” you then wait six months before filing suit, and without a timely notice you are “forever barred.” Public entities are everywhere on Ocean County roads: a county truck on Route 9 in Lakewood, a municipal plow on Route 70 in Brick, or a school bus in Toms River. N.J.S.A. 59:8-9 lets the Superior Court accept a late notice within one year of accrual for extraordinary circumstances, but nobody should plan on it.
Ocean County Crash Lawsuits Are Filed in Toms River
The case goes to the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division, Civil Part, Ocean Vicinage. The Judiciary lists the Ocean civil division office at 118 Washington Street, Toms River, NJ 08754, and the Ocean County Courthouse at 100 Hooper Avenue, Toms River, NJ 08754.
Non-Binding Arbitration Usually Comes First in an Ocean County Auto Case
Under Court Rule 4:21A-1(a)(1), all tort actions “arising out of the operation, ownership, maintenance or use of an automobile” go to mandatory arbitration before trial. The award is not the end of the road: R. 4:21A-6(b)(1) gives either party 30 days from the filing of the award to reject it and demand a trial de novo. We use the arbitration to test the insurer’s real number.
Ocean County Led New Jersey in Fatal Crashes in 2025
By the New Jersey State Police’s count, Ocean County recorded 55 fatal crashes in 2025 with 64 people killed, the highest total of any county in the state that year. NJSP says the figures are “unofficial and subject to change until the associated case is completed”; see the NJSP 2025 fatal crash statistics page.
