The fine is the smallest part. Depending on the charge, a conviction can mean a driver's license suspension (sometimes even where no car was involved), a permanent record that surfaces on background checks for internships, jobs, graduate school, and professional licensing, and college discipline — many universities require students to report charges, and some act on arrests alone.
